Events, Events, Events!
AN EVENT-FULL FEW MONTHS
Hi everyone, Alex here.
We’ve had a busy few months! As well as keeping on top of development we’ve also been showcasing Mythwrecked at a number of physical events, some of them close to home, some slightly(much) further away.
We’ll step through a few in a moment, but first I thought I’d talk a little about why physical ‘IRL’ events are still important to us.
The rise of online events has been incredible for developers around the world so you might wonder what benefits showcasing an indie game at a physical event might hold. Simply put, there is no replacement for watching someone play your game over their shoulder (possibly through your fingers) and then having a chat with them about it afterwards.
You can quickly gauge how excited they are about the high-level concept and also see whether there are any parts they’re struggling with when they play the demo. It’s super handy to get a feel for where the game’s design can be improved to allow for a better experience not just for them, but for others too.
Without further ado let’s take a look at a few of the events we’ve showcased at recently!
WASD x IGN (LONDON, ENGLAND)
Mythwrecked has been shown at numerous physical events before by our publishers, the lovely folks at Whitethorn Games. They’ve been doing an amazing job of showing the game off stateside at PAX, GDC and beyond!
However, WASD x IGN in London was the first time I’d personally showcased the game publicly myself. Showing off a game you’ve been working on at an event can be a strange mix of excitement and mild terror but I needn’t have worried, the game went down a storm.
We were fortunate to have great booth neighbors (Gladieaters and Full Void) and the event flew by. We even had a surprise visit from Elle Osili-Wood, the actress and presenter who lends us her vocal chords to voice Mythwrecked’s player character and unlikely hero, Alex!
SXSW (SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA)
The Mythwrecked dev team is spearheaded from Scotland, so we were really excited when we were invited to showcase the game on the other side of the world, at Sydney, Australia!
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take the time out to attend the event personally so Australia still remains on our bucket list of destinations to visit. We did however have amazing support from a student volunteer Isaac. They did an incredible job managing our booth, sending us feedback and got to attend the prestigious event for free and rub shoulders with the developers.
There were loads of really amazing indie games showcasing there. Even though we couldn’t attend, some developers we knew from social media sent us some photos of them visiting the Mythwrecked booth! Above is the fantastic Jair McBain (above) from the Summerhill Team. We even had prestigious neighbors in the form of Saltsea Chronicles by Die Gute Fabrik who were kind enough to send us a snap.
SCOTTISH GAMES WEEK (EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND)
That brings us to our final event, this time a little closer to home. Last week I attended Scottish Games Week at the spectacular Dynamic Earth venue in Edinburgh.
We moved up to Scotland a couple of years ago so are relative newcomers to the area, which made it even nicer when we were invited to showcase Mythwrecked at a two-day event celebrating the Scottish game industry.
It was a great chance to meet other Scottish developers and make some new friends (we again found ourselves with lovely booth neighbors, this time in the form of the Farewell North game and its creator Kyle).
It also gave us the chance to road test our new Greek beach blanket we used to make the Mythwrecked booth a little more cozy! We’d seen the Gladieaters team theme their table space at WASD x IGN so we were inspired to do the same and bring a bit of Greece to Scotland.
For the second event in a row we also brought the Steam Deck as a second playable device. Mythwrecked is running buttery-smooth on it and folks love to take it for a spin if they’ve had the chance to try one yet.
FOLLOW THE ADVENTURE
That’s all for now, but don’t forget you can keep up to date on Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island by following our Twitter, joining our Discord or subscribing to the Polygon Treehouse Newsletter and if you get the chance wishlisting and following Mythwrecked on Steam would be amazing.
Until next time,
Alex & Team
